Completing a Proposal
For this part of the course I will start to research and consider a working budget and how much I would theoretically charge per day as a photographer (what am I worth?).
The above website has some helpful advice about writing a proposal.
Guidance on budgeting for Arts Council applications can be found at the website below:
Here is a really good website which has some guidance on budgeting and fees.

Thinking about my day rate
Using the research I have done for this section I will calculate an approximate day rate that I would charge for resolving my publication it was a commission created from scratch. I will use the list in the course notes to break down my day rate charges.
Usage
My pictures would be licensed for a short period and would be used regionally. The size of the images would be approximately 20 x 24 inchs for exhibition.
How good are you
I have 20 years of experience as a professional photographer and my images have been used in movies, international media outlets and by companies like Boots and Lycamobile. This experience should give my images a higher value and enable to charge a higher day rate.
What are your photographs worth
This will be determined by the investment my client is prepared to make into their own product.
Stock exchange
Similar high resolution digital images bought from a stock agency might cost between £10-£50 pounds each.
Spreading the cost
I would charge an extra 5% surcharge to cover other costs which might include bookkeeping, marketing and networking.
Running costs
Another 10% woukd have to be added for running costs of my business, for example: insurance, camera servicing, and running a studio.
Gear
Camera equipment is constantly being upgraded and this needs to be accounted for in my costs. Digital SLRs depriciate every year.
Editing and file processing
If I shoot for one day at least the sameamountof time will go I nto processing the files, this the should show in the fees I charge effective ly doubling the final amount.
Plus extras or ‘all in’
I prefer to charge an ‘all in’ fee which can unfortunately put off some potential clients. Thus fee though would include the day shoot, post processing and even travel costs.
What’s your minimum wage
This is difficult to work out but I would need to be making at least £20 an hour after all my deductions are made.
Hidden benefits
I would need to consider carefully the potential for more better paid work in the future and how a particular job Co ls improve my portfolio.
Taking everything into account my day rate would have to start at around £500. This was would be an ‘all in’ fee which would include post processing etc.
Match funding and support in kind
Here is some information supplied by the Arts Council about applying for funding.
Information_sheets_Support_in_kind_Project_grants
I will note down below any ideas I have for support in kind for the publication of my body of work-
Free assistance from family or friends to help with installation of exhibition or Web design.
Possible discount supplied by my lab for printing and mounting.
A percentage of my own fee as an artist for production time.
Exhibition space hire (discount or free).
Equipment hire (discounted or free).
Discounted materials like frames, mounts etc.
Specialist support.
Assistantance with marketing.
Your idea and it’s relevance
Some things I need to consider when communicating my concept –
What work have I done before, and how does it relate to my current project?
During the second year of my degree I made some work that uses the same concept as my current body of work. I used a digital camera only so my experiments with different types of analogue cameras can be seen as a progression of work that I did before.
What concepts and theories are addressed in my project?
My project explores the concept of places altered by horrific crimes. Often the places are not changed physically, so I attempt to communicate the psychological change that may have occurred. I use the genre of ‘late photography’ as a tool together with detailed texts that reveal the hidden histories of the places that I photograph.
Has a similar project been done before. How does my project differ?
A few photographers have made projects that follow a similar concept to mine. Bart Michiels, The Course of History focuses on historical battlegrounds. Also Joel Sternfeld explores places of historical significance in the United States.
How can a reader view my project to see what work has been done a ready towards it?
I am currently working on a website to display my latest body of work. Some of my work can already be found on my Instagram page –
https://www.instagram.com/kierenwelch/
What impact will my project have on the audience?
I think that my conceptual landscape photographs paired with explosive factual text will have quite an impact on the viewer. A mixture of emotions might be triggered be my work. I hope that the audience will consider more carefully places that they visit and try to understand any historical developments that may have happen there.
Is the tone of my writing professional, does my writing instil excitement and enthusiasm?
I hope that the skills I acquired during the contextual studies course will allow me to elucidate clearly and concisely in a professional manner the concept for the presentation of my body of work.
